Jim Hopkins, Equipment Hire Coordinator

I have several years of experience working in the disability sector.  I’ve been a Support Worker with the vision impaired and worked with various Assistive Technologies.  I’ve been with Xavier since the middle of 2015 when I started part time as a Support Worker.  The organisation is filled with people who are passionate about caring for the clients.  All of the staff are highly qualified and very willing to share their wealth of knowledge. A year later, in 2016, it was an easy decision to accept the offer of full time work. My world has been enriched by meeting and getting to know so many of our clients and I’m thrilled to have an opportunity to build the equipment hire service as a way to continue supporting people in need.

Gemma Cameron, Speech Pathologist

Hi I’m Gemma, Xavier’s Speech Pathologist and I’m very excited to be a part of the new multi-disciplinary expansion supporting Xavier’s families! I have been working in the paediatric disability and early intervention area for some time now in both government and non-government services in Australia. I have come to Xavier with knowledge and experience with early intervention, disability, paediatric feeding and Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC). However as we all know, no two kids or families are exactly the same so I’m constantly learning new things professionally and from my clients so that I can provide appropriate support where needed. I enjoy working alongside families to build their skills and understanding about communication and swallowing so that they feel able and confident to implement strategies on a daily basis to support their loved one.

Claire West, Support Worker Coordinator

Hi everyone, my name is Claire West.  I have worked with Xavier since 1994 – so 22 years (give or take a few years when I had my 3 beautiful boys).  I have worked in a few different roles – as a support worker, a structured respite provider, a keyworker and my current role which is Support Worker Coordinator South.  Xavier combines the best of both worlds. It is an extremely flexible, family friendly employer and it is a fantastic organization that does amazing work.  I love coming to work each day.  My colleagues are a group of extremely dedicated and passionate people.  I also get to coordinate an amazing team of diverse, caring, highly skilled support workers that work within a number of different programs.  As part of my role I meet with the families and beautiful children who receive direct care services from Xavier.  It is very rewarding to be able to work with families to achieve the goals and dreams they have for their children – whether it is to join a club, start a hobby or to simply have the opportunity to go for a walk at the waterfront or a picnic in the park.  I also enjoy doing some support work here and there particularly with very complex and palliative children.

Over my 22 years at Xavier I have seen many changes within the disability sector. I am now looking forward to moving towards working under an NDIS. It is an exciting and challenging time to be part of a disability support network so I guess Xavier is stuck with me for a while.

Mitchell, Support Worker

Hi I’m Mitchell, a Support Worker for Xavier. I am thoroughly enjoying being a part of the Xavier team. It is truly gratifying that I am able to work with a diverse range of young people all who have unique backgrounds and stories.  My favourite part of the job is that every day is different and every day is just as rewarding as the next.  Although the job can have its challenges the satisfaction of helping others is worth the effort. Xavier has been very supportive of my growth as a Support Worker since commencing my role. I have also recently had the opportunity to become a part of a specialised team on a project that is being run to support children with tracheostomies. I am very pleased with how far I have been able to come and the new skills I have gained.

Maddi, Support Worker

Hi, my name is Maddi! I have been working for Xavier for nearly 3 years now while completing university studies as an Occupational Therapist. Working for Xavier has taught me the importance of family centred practice and has allowed me to develop a range of skills within the disability sector. I have always enjoyed working with children and as a student occupational therapist, it is great working for a company that promotes an inclusive community for children with disabilities.

I think my favourite thing about working as a support worker is seeing the children progress with their own personal goals. This might be a child saying a new word or seeing a child take a step on their own. These moments are extremely special and I love sharing these milestones with the families I work with.

The positive experiences I have had as a support worker are reflective of the caring and encouraging working environment that Xavier has established. I am very proud to be a support worker for Xavier.
